Welcome to my room tour! This is the place where whimsical articles are written, travel photos are edited, and where all my SEO/WP/Blogging-induced breakdowns occur. This is my haven, my workplace, and my escape from the world (when necessary). The place where I create.
A couple years ago, my family moved into an old 1950s farmhouse that hadn’t been remodeled since the 80s (at least). So, I found myself thrown into the intense world of insulation, drywall, and paint. Which makes me wonder, “How can anyone enjoy flipping houses?”
The room that would become mine was, well, let’s say… not quite up to par? The wood floors were probably once lovely, but had since lost their luster & attractiveness. The upper half of the walls were painted an off-white, and the lower half was covered in artificial wood paneling. Upon pulling the paneling away, we found that this room had once been a baby blue color, but was now disgustingly stained and moldy.
At the end of this post, I’m going to include a “before picture,” so stick around. 🙂
The first thing I had to decide on, when it came to decor choices, was what color my walls were going to be. And, I didn’t have a bedspread to match it to at the time. That lovely, quilted, floral burst of colors you see in the picture is the very latest addition to my room. It literally took a forever amount of shopping (online & in stores) to find exactly what I wanted. Probably because I wasn’t sure what I wanted. I just knew I would know when I saw it. Not the best way to start out a shopper’s hunt, but sometimes that’s the only option you have. Please tell me I’m not the only one who shops like this
So, as you can see, I picked out a nice teal shade for my walls, and then everything just sort of fell in to place. A fox rug here, my Great-grandmother’s chair there, a tea towel from Ireland (given to me by a very dear friend) to hang on my closet door.
I love decorating, but I must say, I’m glad that my room is nearly finished. Hanging pictures is a lot more draining than it looks. Especially when you have a total of 26 items hanging on your walls. Which I do. And there’s still room for more! 😛
You’ve probably noticed the sweet, fluffy, white dog with the dopey look on his face, that keeps popping up in a few of my photos..? That would be Charlie. We’ve owned him for nearly seven years, and we’re the best of pals. He’s always sneaking into my room to sprawl out on my rugs or jump up on my chair.
Now, prepare yourself. This is the part where I show you what my room used to look like. Blagh! 😛
Did I mention that I did not replace the old wood floors? Nope. I painted them over with some of Annie Sloane’s Chalk Paint. I gladly give that paint an 11 out of 10 star rating! No stripping, no sanding, no priming needed. It really made the whole process of redoing my floors soooo much easier. And, I loved the velvety thickness of the pure white paint.
And that wraps up my room tour! But now, I want to share a few links to some of my favorite blogger’s room tours:
Tell me, where do you like to do your work? Do you blog from your bedroom? Write romantic fiction at a little Parisian cafe? Or perhaps you’re a freelancer, soaking up the sun at a breezy beach?
